XP's built in driver for vanta and riva cards is not great as it seems
not to have the proper support for directx.
One of the archived vNidia drivers works better (66.9something). It
was dropped from the later revisions. The one supplied by windows
update is a bad one. Don't use it!

If you have a workaround, use it. I wouldn't put too much money into a
pentuim 3 class machine. As a similar machine could be had for less
than $100.
