I did some checking, and the 1390 should send the authentication info through the SSL tunnel. The person I checked with did some extensive testing on various connection methods using the Dell cards, which included PEAP/MS-CHAPv2 and said that it did not send the info in the clear. He also recommended making sure you have the latest drivers for the card (available on the Dell support website, I can give you a direct link if you need it).
