I use the email application so I can read/reply when I am offline in
the Underground. Gmail uses encrypted POP/SMTP, which connect to
different ports.

My wife's phone connect to everything and everywhere (she is on
monthly and X-Series) so maybe there are additional blocks if they
detect you're using your phone as a modem?

Anyway, it is a shame I cannot get unrestricted access on PAYG. It is
so good not to be on a contract....
