Does the recipient have a very old (> three years old) phone? This
sounds like they are using "Shortmail", Sprint's proprietary predecessor
to SMS.

Some older Sprint phones can't do SMS at all. Some (I suspect your co-
worker's is one) can do both, and it depends on how the phone is
provisioned as to which is used.

There may be costs involved in switching from Shortmail to SMS, I don't
know. This may have been what the Sprint Store Rep was trying to explain
to your co-worker.
