I can check if a PSU is feeding power to a HDD. Take a multimeter.
Backprove the connectors on the back of the connector. The process is
explained in the book "Upgrading and repairing PCs" by scott mueller.

As far as I know, that doesn't diagnose a HDD problem. That diagnoses a
PSU problem. How the PSU behaves when loaded.

even better. if no picture is even required. so usenet is fine. I
think a thread on changing a controller board of a hdd is good, if
you're willing to write up how to do it.

It could be your legacy ;)
