Thanks, that's exactly what we've done, nowhere near 100 quid credit
though

An update:

The new phone (Nokia 1110i) and SIM are definitely "new" UK stock and
were in a Nokia box with an Orange security seal.

Before contacting Orange I discovered that:

My Orange contract SIM works in the other users old Orange PAYG
(Motorola 3788e) and vice versa without a problem (as expected)

But, my Orange contract SIM in their new phone doesn't work. After
power on it asks for a *security* code (not a pin code) This code is
not 12345 or 00000 or 0000. Also their old PAYG SIM in their new
phone also asks for a security code in an identical manner. I know
what my pin is, I disabled it whilst it was in my phone (Nokia 6210)
and got exactly the same results when trying my Orange Contract SIM in
the new phone.

We then contacted Orange, got the old PAYG Orange number/account
transferred to the new SIM and it immediately worked in the new phone

But despite this, the new SIM *only* works in that particular phone,
it won't work in my phone or their old PAYG phone - The phones don't
even recognise the SIM. My Orange contract SIM still won't work in
their new phone as it is still requesting a security code.

I'm still as confused as hell as to why!

Any explanations?
