Because its their DID.

It can do, but doesnt have to. the voip provider can try communicating
with it and see if it responds and do what is appropriate depending on
whether the ATA responds or not.

Nope. Its quite happy to have the N95 turned off or out of range of the wifi and
just tries to communicate with it when it needs to because of an incoming call.
