http://smspup.com/ is free but you sign up to receive spam.
http://www.net2mobile.com.au/ is not free but you pay around 18/20 cents
to send an SMS.
Or you can sign up to Telstra's SMS Buddy service if you have a Telstra
mobile. Does the same thing as net2mobile but it's an app not a web
service. Your SMSes are billed to your mobile's account.
Dunno if the other telcos provide such a service.
ICQ used to have an SMS messaging service for Optus, Voda and Telstra. But
gradually, all telcos withdrew from the service. Was great but you were
limited to a few SMSes a day.
