Plenty of free software out there that you can use.
Try one of the flavors of Linux.
If you need to run windows software, install 'wine' on your Linux machine.

If you run your computer off of a CD, like KNOPPIX CD, then you are safe
from worms and viruses because the CD can not be corrupted by a worm or
virus.
If you get infected, you just reboot your computer and you are clean again.
