You won't hear from Verizon. As long as you pay their bill every month!
If you get a new phone from them, you'll get a new contract with it.
AFAIK, there is very little benefit, to you, in having a contract! I've
never renewed any of my contracts. The contracts last for two years,
the phones for five years or so. I spend sixty percent of my time
without contract. The service works just the same as long as you pay
your bill on time.
