Default Help: 1mile Non-Line of Sight Wireless Link

Hi -- a friend of mine and I are looking for a summer project, and decided to attempt to construct a high-speed wireless link between our two houses. We're looking for the fastest speed available that will minimize packet loss and, most importantly, be able to work without line of sight. A quick overview of the setup:

House A is at 240ft elevation with line of sight to a ridge about 1km away.
House B is at 150ft elevation without line of sight to the ridge about 1km away.
The straight line distance between the two houses is about 2km.

At first we had this dream of burying fiber in our neighbor's backyards at night ... but then we realized this entailed crossing public railroad tracks ... no good. So it looks like wireless is the best bet. I'm pretty fluent in networking technologies but when it comes to wireless, fairly clueless.

Is there a setup that would work for this? What kind of speeds can we expect? What type of antennas? Is it worth considering a remote repeater station on the ridge between our houses? Can it be solar powered?

Thanks for your help, and we're looking forward to documenting our project and putting it online for everyone to benefit.
