What you are trying to do is outside the USB spec, - but, with active extension cables such as the DSE XH8199 5m cable you may be able to get it to work.
Alot depends on the surrounding enviroment such as electrical noise generating appliances, motors, flourecent lights etc.

If you can keep the USB cable away from mains cables it is likely to work ok.
