I walked into an Orange shop and purchased one for 4.50 - can't
remember how, but only had to buy a 5 quid top-up. I understand that
these very cheap phones have been discontinued and you may have to pay
a tenner for one

Good idea - for this sort of money it's effecttively a disposable
phone
