the nzwireless guys will set you in the right direction... their standard hardware cost is about $250 and that would include a 19dBi antenna and a 200mW Senao bridge. Their install fee is about $150 which is worth it unless you know what you're doing

linking up means "connecting" mac was probably asking if he could link up to the nzwireless service. To which I can only answer - point an antenna around and see if you can pick up their AP's in netstumbler. If you're on a hill facing the right direction, you'll probably be in a prime position to get good service.

Me, well I'm in the flat of a valley.. the nzwireless AP I'm connecting to right now is semi-blocked by a motel across the road that sits right in my fresnel... so I'm missing out on a bit of performance. It goes pretty good nonetheless
