Well it wouldn't be the first time a customer service person has told
me a lie rather than explain the truth!

I did ask her explicitly, "not even if I had a contract" and she said
"no". She explained that the network could not support it. There is
also no mention of it on their website.

Either way - if they do support it but don't document it or admit to
it, no use to us.

Shame as I have been with Orange since they only had 2 phones to
choose from. I switched to PAYG too many years ago to remember - not
long after they introduced it I think.
