Often times these school networks require additional information to log in. One I know of specifically requires your mac address to be loaded into their system. Using internet explorer, try bringing up msn.com or something simple. See if you're redirected to a splash page with more information on how to log in to the network.
You may want to contact the schools IT dept, as they'll help you with any additional information. They don't make their free setups bullet proof, just wander proof. I'm thinking that is what's holding you back.
