My attempt to pay on a Mastercard was rejected but a Visa card seemed to
work OK.

I caused a massive tailback at a supermarket checkout when trying to pay
by Mastercard a couple of hours later - till locked and phone calls to
their merchant services provider with no other payment method accepted.
The Visa issuer phoned me much later and an email from e2s followed
later still. When phoning in response to this they knew only of the Visa
refusal (the Mastercard refusal being "at my end" so it doesn't show on
their CS screens) and they tried to get me to complete payment over the
phone - but that would probably scupper the cashback so I declined.

Both card issuers claimed that mobile phone transactions (especially at
this time of year) are likely to trigger a referral to the fraud
department but I don't know that it's necessarily that simple.
