i've just done two things:

i've just installed xp service pack 2 and i've downloaded a driver as an .exe file from intel.com and updated the driver in the control panel/system/hardware/device manager. i looked for a PRO/wireless 2100, have a look what type yours is in system/hardware/device manager.

there's a load more wireless related icons in control panel now, maybe it ws sp2?

anyway, it now works. i've pulled out my 3com card and am using it to connect to this forum. :-)
