Most likely the backlight in the screen is stuffed. You can confirm this by holding the screen in bright light; you should be able to make out a faint image still on the screen. Usually this relates to a problem with the inverter circuit for the backlight.

If the screen is under warranty, return it. Sometimes it is possible to obtain a similar model display with a broken screen but a functional backlight and swap the inverter PCB.
