Everyone underestimated the fact that most Verizon customers would not
move to AT&T simply to get an iPhone. Verizon continued to have more net
additions than AT&T in almost every quarter since the iPhone was
introduced. Of course if Verizon had had the iPhone they would have had
even more net additions. But for most Verizon customers, even if they
really wanted an iPhone, the Android alternatives were good enough.
Now that the Verizon customers that have the original Android phones are
eligible for discounted new phones, it's likely that many will opt for
the Verizon iPhone versus another Android model, but many have gotten
used to Android and will stick with it.
Now AT&T is in a panic, re-introducing (kind-of) an unlimited data plan
for the iPhone. But Verizon (apparently) offers unlimited data _with_
tethering at no extra cost, you only pay extra if you want the hotspot
capability.
