At first it seemed that it could be caused by some device driver
conflict, but that has proven negative so far. I booted up on the other
hdd in my PC, which just has the os on it and some backup data, but no
updates to the os like with my main hdd. Same mouse problem.

I've also noticed if I pull the mouse lead to the left it temporarily
eases the mouse freeze problem. But sooner or later the mouse freezes up
completely until I reboot. It sort of suggests that the problem may lie
with the mouse, but I'll wait until I find another PC to try it out on.
