Default Wired/Wireless network: cannot delete connections on laptop

I am trying to set up a wired/wireless network with my desktop and my
laptop. With this group's advice I'm almost there. I'm running XPPro
SP2 on both, and I'm allowing only authenticated users on either
computer. There are identical administrator accounts on both machines.
Whenever I plug my laptop into the router the two computers can find
each other on the network and share files with no glitches. However,
when I use the laptop to connect to the network wirelessly, neither
computer finds the other on the network.
I've noticed that whenever I connect by wireless, an "Internet
connection" icon pops up in my Network Connections folder, and it
cannot be deleted. Likewise, I cannot delete or disable the Local Area
Connection [the laptop's wired connection] even when it's disconnected.
I feel like this must have something to with the fact that the two can
share files in one setup but not the other. Anyone know what's up?
