A few months ago I asked for the same advice. I contacted the seller
for the ESN and then checked with VZ to make sure it could be activated.
I made sure the phone came with a charger and the user manual. I bought
from an individual, not a phone seller. I bought the phone I wanted at
a good price from an honest person and I'm happy. I couldn't activate
it online, but VZ CS was able to do it and there was no charge.
