Unfortunately roadrunner=aol and I have never heard of them offering
authenticated SMTP so I would agree on not going down that road.

I use my mail server but I have set it access via VZWs SMTP for others
and it does work. Have you experimented with the few permutations
involving SMTP authentication in Outlook such as "use same settings" or
"log on using and enter the credentials in the 2 boxes? Have you double
checked everything to make sure you didn't "fat finger" some entry?
