Yes it will still work, so tell him not to go selling it on ebay! Phone
companies often allow phones to be used, it's a loss of revenue if they
don't. There is nothing to stop your friend taking it to a shop and having
the IMEI changed for a tenner first.
People often think of phone insurance as a cheap way to upgrade.
Unless you're extremely careless you shouldn't need it.
