Unfortunately some adapters and routers cannot work together as the encryption strengths are different (as you've found). The best bet would be to try and match the brand of router and adapter, that way you can be sure that they'll work together. Also read up on what encryption an adapter supports before buying, they usually outline them in the features or specifications.
