Mobile Mail is the killer app, I ended up late for work cos the battery was
flat and my alarm never went off.

I use the Yahoo!GO Mail instead, you don't need the app on all the time and
it seems to receive them fairly quickly or just use the built-in email
client and have it set to retreive you mail every 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 mins
within a time interval (I had mine set to not receive during the night when
asleep).
