Verizon does this now too, they don't tell you your used minutes
verbally. If you have text messaging turned off, even free messages
don't get through. You can call 611 and get it verbally. I had to turn
off text messaging because I was getting billed for so many junk messages.

I'm sure that these messages are free, but you have to have text
messaging enabled on your account which subjects you to being billed for
junk messages.
