Yeah, for landlines calling to the PagePlus phone, but I had a non-local
TDMA/AMPS prepaid for a while and it was no big deal. It was mainly for
urgent calls from my kids. If I had to call the number from a landline
it was pretty cheap with TalkLoop or OneSuite so I didn't worry about
it, but I usually called from my Verizon account where I rarely use even
1/2 of my monthly peak minutes.

PagePlus is almost the standard for low-cost prepaid with wide coverage
to supplement service for those with Cingular and T-Mobile that need the
coverage in places such as you have found that lack GSM coverage but
that have CDMA or AMPS coverage. The Bay Area is full of such gaps in
Cingular's coverage, though they appear to be working at filling them
in. It'll be interesting to see if the next round of surveys shows any
improvement for Cingular, as right now they are rated pretty poorly for
this area by all the independent surveys.
