Any early insight on the AT&T Tilt phone?

I'm thinking of getting one, and am curious to hear what the 'early
adopters' have to say

One guy in the DFW Mobile Device User Group bought one. He liked it so much
he sold his iPhone.

An engineer I team with, likes his, but is hampered because it will not work
with ActiveSync/WinXP. Neither ATT nor HTC has been able to provide relief.

Depending on your tech capabilities; the GPS is either 'open' to Google or
closed to only ATT location software.

I'll keep my 8525 and Mobile 5 until we debug the problems. I've suspended
recommending the device; suggest some look at the HTC Advantage depending on
goals.

I've got one and it is working with Active Sync right now with XP. Dunno
why your friend's isn't as it comes bundled with it. It moved the photos
off the camera onto the laptop without an issue. Large movie files (about
600K) can take a long time, like hours, far more than a USB 2 connection it
seems. You'd be better off getting the 2 gig card AT&T sells that has the
micro SD card to mini SD or regular SD card for $30 and using a card
reader/writer if you want to transfer movies onto the phone.

The MS Mobile 6 browser (IE7) kind'a sucks. It's very finicky with some
Flash web pages (won't work at all) and its Java and Cookies management
could be improved on. Very little can be done with the IE7 settings. Opera
8.65 for MS Mobile 5&6 is a far better addition but it costs $25 to use it
beyond the 30 day limit. It will allow you to use a Flash cab installation
file off Adobe's site if you need Flash. Java is better handled in it as
well as cookies.

The TelNav GPS is interesting and very useful for $10 a month. However -
and that is a BIG HOWEVER - you need to be near a site with cell service or
it won't work. Just found that out today. The maps and data seem to be
hinged upon the cell service from TelNav and not so much GPS which just
nails down the location. Iow, no cell service = no GPS or Maps either, it
just sits there and will time out looking for a cell to connect to. Seems
they could at least provide some data for the area it was last used in but I
guess you would need to do it yourself when you leave cell land.

The headphone jack is also the USB mini jack. Sort'a weird if you need a
headset. The 802.11 works very well with my DSL wireless modem.

It has many of the same pluses and minuses of the 8525.

Depends on your opinion of a Windows Mobile OS, and
how usable you find the keyboard. Also consider how good
3G coverage is in your area, for which AT&T will charge you
$39.99/month and up for a required Data plan.

I'm that engineer. I just worked through the problems today. There are
two problems with some editions of the CD supplied by AT&T. First, it
has buggy detection for Macromedia Flash and will continue telling you
to install Flash even if it's already installed. Second, it has flags
set that will cause Outlook support files to be installed, but not
Outlook itself. Fortunately, this is fixable on the fly, if you can
successfully bring up the selection page (which is well-hidden). I
never could get around the Flash problem, which meant that the user
interface for installing necessary software was broken and all the
software had to be installed manually.

True. I do find it interesting that at home I have 3G and at work I have E.
Very odd, but I guess that's how the towers are set up.

Fwiw, the E seems to be more free-flowing and doesn't seem to time-out as
the 3G does at times. Dunno???

The GPS function of the Tilt is nice...when it connects to a tower. If it
doesn't, you just sit there until it pops up a "No connection" message.
They need to load some minimal maps so it will work just off the GPS portion
of the TelNav option.
