Another Apple patent application has been recently uncovered detailing a
new method for pairing wireless devices to other devices. The
application notes that many wireless devices, especially Bluetooth ones
like the iPhone, require manual pairing to avoid interfering with other
devices, but this poses a problem.
Pairing a Bluetooth device often requires the user to enter a PIN code
for the devices to pair them wirelessly. However, many devices have a UI
that isn't always easy to use (although I wold argue that it would be
hard to find one easier than the iPhone).
Apple's patent application describes a method of exchanging PIN codes
between devices using a wired link, such as USB or FireWire cables, and
peripherals including but not limited to computers, phones, media
players, printers and headsets.
This would theoretically allow users to quickly pair a device like the
iPhone to a Mac or PC over a wired connection.
