Default Deletion of GMail messages

I am using an Android (2.2) phone (Motorola Atrix) and e-mail messages
are accumulating in my GMail Inbox. How do I delete these messages
(they are called "conversations" by GMail) after I have read them? I
see that they can be deleted individually at the time of reading, but
is there a way to delete them as a batch? Or selection among a batch?

Best,

Bob

There's button in Gmail that lets you delete all message in the inbox
or Spam folder.

Is your Android MUA (mail user agent) setup to download mail using
IMAP4 or POP3? If IMAP4, everything you delete on the phone is
magically deleted on GMail and versa visa. If POP3, you have to
delete them on each end seperately. This is one of the nice
advantages of IMAP4. However, deleting mail from your inbox does not
really remove the messages from the phone or from GMail. You have to
also empty the Trash folder.

Also, make sure you use delete instead of archive.

My employer's hosted gmail reports how close I am to my quota; I'm
guessing that regular gmail does as well?

If you are using the default Android GMail client, turn on "batch operations"
in the settings. Checkboxes will appear to the left of each message,
and selecting one or more gives you more buttons (archive, delete,
labels) that operate on the selected messages.

I am trying to delete the mail in the Inbox on the phone, not on the
GMail site on the Web. Where is the button in the phone?

AFAIK there's no way to do this on the phone. Google considers this a
"feature" - the rest of us would call it a "bug".

Found it! Answered my own question through trial and error.

Open the Inbox for GMail on the phone. Select the "Menu" icon (left
bottom). Select "More". Select "Settings". Then select "Batch
Operations".

This allows you to select or deselect the individual messages as they
sit in the Inbox, and then, once you have selected the ones you want
to delete, you press the delete button and they disappear. The ones
which have not been selected, remain in the Inbox.

BTW, I am told that the deleted messages are sent to the Trash, and
unless you go into the Trash and delete them there, they are not
really "gone". :-) They are also still present on the GMail Website
and have to be deleted there as well if you are using POP3. I
understand that with IMAP, when you delete them on the phone, they
will be deleted on the GMail Website.

This seems to be yet another attempt by Google to "bury" certain
functions several layers deep in order to keep you a "captive" to
their system. Rather like Microsoft and Apple. :-)

I suggested this yesterday.

That is correct, as Jeff and others have already posted. I believe
GMail can be configured to automatically purge messages in the trash
after 30 (or N?) days.

Google didn't invent the POP3 protocol, so it's hard to blame them for
this feature.
