Default IPhone for former Verizon user

I left AT&T several years ago because their coverage and quality in
Westchester County, NY (about 25 miles north of mid-town Manhattan) was
horribly poor. I am thinking of returning to AT&T on 7/11/08. How is the
AT&T service in my area? Perhaps I should try an inexpensive AT&T phone just
to sample the service. If I do, does AT&T offer a free trial (Verizon gives
you a 30 day free trial)? Which phone should I try (I would like to try a
phone that has similar attributes to the IPhone, but on a basic level)?

How long ago is several years? I used to live in Port Chester (just
across the border from Greenwich, CT; exit 21 off I-95 in NY). I never
had a serious coverage problem in White Plains, Port Chester, various
parts of CT, etc, though while on TDMA I did have fairly spotty in-
building coverage in some areas. I signed up as an ATTWS TDMA
subscriber in mid-1999 and migrated to GSM in 2002-ish.

Never had any coverage issues on GSM except now, years later, because
the building in which I work (Long Island) was built with RF shielding
integral to the structure - some kind of avionics test facility. They
actually installed a microcell in the ceiling as it's cheaper than
rebuilding the walls.

I left AT&T in January, 2002. I remember my frustration with AT&T. I left
them around the same time it became possible to 'port' your landline phone
number to a cell phone. BTW, I am in Port Chester every day - I work out at
the Bally's gym. Interestingly, even though I am thrilled with my Verizon
service, I have absolutely no cell phone service inside Bally's. I leave my
cell phone in the car so that I can at least gut my missed calls.

I like and work in Armonk and recently got a Blackberry Pearl with AT&T
service. I've been pleasantly surprised how good the coverage is. (Of
course, there is no cell service at my house - I've tried VZW, ATT, Sprint
and T-Mobile!!) but in most other areas I've had no problem.
