Default iPhone Killer on Sprint to be limited to 5GB data/Month

Sprint Capping "Unlimited" 3G Data Service at 5GB

Gizmod has raved on Sprint's EV-DO data service more than once, in no
small part because they were the only carrier to have truly unlimited
3G data, while AT&T and Verizon capped their service at 5GB. Our love
affair just might be over. According to a leaked update of their terms
of service, effective July 31st, they'll be enacting a 5GB cap as
well.

"Sprint reserves the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of
data transferred and to deny, terminate, modify, or suspend service if
usage exceeds 5GB per month in total or 300MB/month while off-network
roaming."

If that didn't exist, in some form, in a prior TOS, then I suspect that gives
users a free out on their contract if they are working under a data contract.
I suspect though, that the new wording is simply more clarification of current
wording and as such, they will not be negating any contracts. Think about it
.... no company in their right mind would offer unlimitted and uncapped
wireless download [via EVDO]. The way it is now, my Verizon phone shows
signal strength for EVDO separately from 1x voice. In the morning or during
much of the day, I will see three of four bars for EVDO when at home. In the
evening, I usually see no bars or one bar, which means it is being used
heavily in my vicinity. Having said that, I haven't had any issues bringing
up news or weather on my cell phone during these periods (I just pay $5 month
for using data on a per minute basis consumed from my anytime minutes).

I have already seen a complaint from existing users at Sprint. Sprint
will allow them to drop the data portion of their account without any
penalty but if you try to drop a Voice plan part then you pay an ETF.

There is an angry post which I saw via Digg that they are mad about
'being screwed by Sprint'. Search for the text between the marks and
you should see the web site hosting their complaints.

I probably came across it via the new FireFox and its Digg add-on;
'Digg - recently added'.

BTW there is a killer FireFox add-on called PicLens you must try if
you have a fast PC and can do video. This is neat like Apple's
CoverFlo but really versatile on the PC. You could enter a search word
and have it automatically display pictures and videos continuously for
hours after a certain query. It mixes images in a slide show but plays
each video it fines in amongst the slides.

And that is different from AT&T and Verizon just how?

According to a Director of Sprint Business Operations, it will be a
soft cap. If you were to use say 10 Gig in one isolated month, they
will let it slide. No one is going to be cut off without warning.

Actually it does differ from Verizon, in a good way- Sprint and AT&T use
"soft caps" meaning they'll "reserve the right" to suspend/terminate/etc.
customers that exceed 5GB regularly, whereas Verizon is now employing a 5G
hard limit- you pay per MB for data transfered in excess of 5GB.
