Default iPhone without a SIM?

Any iPhone users around here? If so, any chance you can tell me if you
can use your iPhone as a wifi iPod without the SIM?

I realize this might change on the 3G model, but in short, I have the
opportunity to get paid to have an iPhone 3G. However, I expect I'll
end up moving the SIM between my iPhone and AT&T TILT on a pretty
regular basis.

I'm trying to figure out if I can sell my iPod Touch and use the iPhone
as a replacement when I have the SIM in my AT&T TILT, or if I should
plan on keeping the Touch too.

If anyone has an iPhone handy, can you give it a 10 second shot for me?

Just tried it. Seems to work fine. My Location in Google Maps even
works. Mail works, iPod works, iTunes works, Safari works, Contacts in
Phone work, but if you try to dial a number you get a pop-up that says
"No SIM installed". There's a little No SIM messsage in the upper left
corner where the AT&T logo usually is. Took a bit more than 10
seconds... took longer than that to find a paper clip! ;->

Popped the SIM right back in and back to normal.

One of the kids managed to lose her KRZR, so we're gonna see about
getting her an iPhone. Due to a quirk in my contract (Not in the US, so
not on AT&T) my contract gets renewed too whether I want it or not.

I figure I can replace my 8GB iPod Touch with a 16GB iPhone 3G and go
from there even if I don't use it as a phone full time.

Thanks!
