Apple continues to crush the old Windows & Linux machines with perfectly
crafted products. The new 11 & 13 inch MacBook Airs will wipe out the
rest of the Windows and Linux netbook market.
A wonderful show!
If you don't like to see advanced software, jump ahead to about 70
minutes in, otherwise just watch the whole thing... it really provides a
glimpse into the future.
Agreed. Anyone who wants to spend $1000 on a netbook instead of $250 would
be silly not to take a look at the Air.
Or, they could buy a $250 netbook and Hackintosh it if they really require a
10" computer with less software support than a Windows PC.
Why don't you keep your Mac advocacy crap out of the cellphone NG's, Oxy...

No, the PC clones don't run OS-X. That's what Apple's value proposition
is, though with Windows 7 it's less of a selling point than when it was
competing against Vista or XP.
In terms of internal components, Apple is somewhat of a PC Clone, but
for better or worse Apple doesn't push the limit in terms of the latest
processors or graphics. The MacBook air is a difficult design because of
the the thermal requirements, yet there are comparably sized laptops
already using later processors.
Acer came out with a 3.1 pound Core i7 (also available in core i5 and
core i7) design with an 11.6" screen, comparable battery life to the
Macbook Air, a real (non-chiclet) keyboard, a real Ethernet port, and a
500GB hard drive (versus 64GB or 128GB of flash), an HDMI port, and a
VGA port.
The thing is that the Acer machine can easily be your primary computer
as it's fast enough, had a good keyboard, and has sufficient
connectivity, including an Ethernet port and HDMI. The MacBook Air, as
nice as it is, is a machine to be used primarily for travel when you're
away from your faster primary computer that has more storage and
connectivity. Is the 0.8 pound difference between the MacBook Air and
the Acer Timeline X worth giving up the speed, expandability, and real
keyboard? Plus all the dongles you need just to get stuff like HDMI and
VGA on the Air? Maybe the new Lion version of OS-X is going to make it
all worthwhile, but for now Windows 7 trumps OS-X in functionality.

But not at a price like Apple is offering.
In reality, the Acer Timeline X 11.6" machine is the real competition
for the MacBook Air 11.6". A bit heavier, but it has a much better
keyboard, a high capacity hard drive, a much faster processor, plus
HDMI, VGA and Ethernet ports.

No, Sony hasn't caught up to the MacBook Airs yet, even back in 2007
they were still in the "walkman" stage when it comes to ultralight
laptops don't forget.

But it wasn't near as powerful, feature rich or cost effective. Plus it
still ran Windows, so nobody bought it.

not sure what you mean? apple now controls all phones, tvs, music,
computers, video, so it's important to keep everyone informed at the
same time... why are you against that?
you'll move up to all apple products in the next 4 years, so don't worry!

what? they don't? They obviously control the direction of all cell
phones, they announced the AppleTV just a month ago and now have sold
over 400,000 units, so they control the direction of Television. For
Music, they control over 72%, with OSX they are the leader in OSes and
software development of all platforms, so again they control what
everyone does. Now Movies, TVs and Video is primarily done through Apple
iOS devices, so you seem uniformed... learn to use facts like I do, it
will help as you discover the larger world.

Ox-turd, you are one of the primary reasons people hate Apple products
because of your arrogance. Do you not realize that what you do make people
dislike you? And that carries on to Apple.

In many product categories, Apple is a fast-follower, but their products
succeed where the products of the companies that came out with the first
products in the category failed. Apple is extremely good at
understanding the key deficiencies that explain why similar products
fail, and correcting those when they enter a market.
The new Macbook Air is a response to the explosive success of the
netbook, but it's a far better product than most netbooks. Unfortunately
for Apple. there are a bunch of thin and light higher performance,
higher functionality, 3 pound, 11.6" notebooks being introduced at the
same time as the 11.6" MacBook Air, at comparable prices. So the MacBook
Air may continue to be a very niche product, attractive to hard core
Apple fans but not to those looking for a thin and light with a full
complement of I/O ports and more storage.
Tablets have been around for years, but other than some vertical
applications, they failed in the consumer segment because they were too
heavy, too expensive, and had mediocre battery life because the
manufacturers were designing them to run Windows applications. Apple
decided that defining a limited set of applications that could run on a
lower performance processor would be an acceptable compromise in return
for lighter weight, lower price, and much longer battery life. They were
right. The iPad is an amazingly cool product, and the next generation
will take care of the few issues with it such as the lack of a camera.

But you are overlooking the fact Macs are built far better than any PC
on the market. They also have much better software availability and
value over time.
The Windows PC market has pretty much died out in the USA, everyone
wants a Mac or nothing. This was all predicted 20 years ago and the fact
Apple is the 2nd most valuable company on the planet shows customers
have spoken.

Yes, the Macbook Air was not a big seller and the follow-up is also
likely to be a very niche product. Even among Apple aficionados, the
regular Macbook is a much more appealing product. For those looking for
a thin and light that are not tied to Apple there are much more
appealing products in the Windows space. I expect that Apple may come
out with a product between the Macbook Air and the smallest Macbook in
order to compete in that market.
They need to revamp their Macbook line in order to catch up, hardware
wise, with the higher end laptops from Dell, HP, Sony, Acer, etc. No
high end laptop buyer is going to put up with the lack of an integrated
HDMI port.

You really don't need HDMI with 802.11n, iTunes 10 allows you to simply
share your videos right into your TV, so the days of HDMI cables are
coming to an end.
