I can look forward to higher prices and no customer service.
Yay.
Through the years, I've used all of the big guys except
AT&T/Cingular/SBC and pre-merger AirTouch. There's a reason I stayed
away from AT&T. When I lived in Ohio, they proved they'd do anything to
steal money from the consumer. I'm sure y'all have already heard about
my little fiasco with AT&T DSL.
I've been totally AT&T-free since moving to California; my cell phone
service has been with VZW/Sprint/T-Mobile (depending on which time
period you're talking about) and my landline/TV/Internet were with
Charter Cable for several years, and right now I'm using Verizon FiOS.
Now, this.
Dammit.
The only good thing I can see coming out of this: T-Mo has been rather
slow to improve their data coverage up here in the desert. AT&T already
had the dominant GSM network, and they probably already have HSPA+ up
here.

So much for the rumored Sprint move on T-mob. Lucky T-mob users just
missed out on years of double billing for data and customer service in
Calcutta hanging up on you.

I've been with T-Mo since October 2001, and contract free since April 2006.
I'm actually considering calling T-Mo tomorrow and renewing for two years
to preserve my grandfathered plan, and adding a line to it, plus scoring
whatever deals they'll give me, so I can insure keeping my plan at least
for a while post takeover. IIRC, when Cingular absorbed the old ATTWS
creating the "new" AT&T Wireless, they started dismantling the old ATTWS
grandfathered plans before too long.

As someone who gets paid to support technology users, I have a major
philosophical problem with outsourced, overseas call centers. If you're
going to outsource, there are places IN THE US where people can work for
less than in the major cities, and still make a living wage.
Having said that... T-Mo uses outsourced CS in certain cases (although
not always) - but at least T-Mo's outsourced CS reps are friendly,
trained well and empowered to take care of the customer.
An old friend gave me a Sprint phone back in 2000, and I put my (then-)
girlfriend on that phone. So, she used Sprint, I used Verizon. Then,
after Verizon pissed me off in 2004, I jumped ship to Sprint too.
I think it was about six months afterwards that the merger kicked in.
Until then, customer service had been fair to good... the problem with
Sprint's customer service wasn't so much that they were outsourced;
rather, the new CS reps were ignorant jackasses who would say anything
just to get you off the phone.

Well, both of my phones are on contracts. I'm ok.
My (now ex-)wife's aren't, but I don't know if it's as much of an issue
for her; she and my oldest daughter aren't using plans that are likely
to be dropped. Neither is my son, actually.
I, on the other hand, have a really great plan that AT&T probably will
not keep. But, I'm under contract, so I'm not really concerned about
that. Changes in the number of minutes or the amount of data I can use
are *material* changes, and if they start playing that game, I walk
without having to pay an ETF.

I don't recognize your name, maybe you haven't heard it
AT&T (back then, they were SBC Ameritech) placed a bridge tap on my
line. This is a screwup on their part. It was a copper loop that was
misplaced and generated so much noise that I couldn't get my DSL to
sync, modem connections were not possible at anything more than 9600
bps, and there was a ton of static on voice calls. With two small kids,
I'm lucky I didn't have to call 911 during those two months.
They took a month or two to fix everything. During that time, they sent
all of their Cleveland repair teams to Toledo to fix downed phone lines
during a big snowstorm. My problem with that? Toledo's a fraction of the
size of Cleveland. It wasn't NECESSARY to send everyone there. (Idiots.)
anyhow, we finally got things fixed, and then they told us that,
although we'd paid about $180 for two months of service we didn't
receive, we could only get a credit of $5 because we weren't without
dialtone.
Technically, this was true; we had dialtone, but the phones and DSL were
unusable.
So I disputed the entire bill, and sent the Ohio Public Utilities
Commission after them. PUCO was actually pretty awesome. They responded
quickly, and repeatedly kicked the asses of several people in upper
management until they issued a full credit.
The best thing was the repeated collections calls, during which I
reminded AT&T's collections morons that they aren't allowed to take
action on any dollar amount in dispute. I don't recall whether this is
an FCC rule, or an FTC rule that is part of the federal Fair Debt
Collection Practices Act. It's one or the other.
At one point, an AT&T billing rep actually said that it seemed that AT&T
would rather get spanked by state regulators than do the right thing on
their own. I totally believe that. I believe AT&T is that stupid/evil.

Let's hope. When Cingular converted their TDMA network to GSM, they
slimed the customers who refused to switch with a $5 month "legacy
technology" fee or somesuch, presumably to avoid making a material change
in the plan itself. I can easily see a "legacy billing system" fee in
our futures, waived if we just switch to current AT&T plan...

I am thinking the same thing, hoping for a grandfather clause. For new
phone I might go for a Motorola model as only Moto seems to have T-Mo
phones with the 850 WCDMA band which is common on AT&T network.
This AT&T / T-Mo deal struck me as the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact of 1939
must have struck the contemporaries. It was well camouflaged with that
canard about the T-Mo - Sprint merger buzz.

Yeppers. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em...or, more accurately, buy 'em.
Imagine the investment in both time and money necessary to gain the same
number of new customers competitively, by offering a "better" product? If
the answer is multiple choice, one of the choices would have to be...Never.
If approved, AT&T vaults to the #1 spot. One thing for sure, providing a
better "customer experience" was not a major factor in the decision. Watch
for Verizon to buy Sprint sooner rather than later.

Would you expect AT/T to drop phones which had long term contracts

Thanks. May I suggest one way to limit minutes and SMS is to get a
Google Voice number? I have had one for three years running, free, and
it has worked very well. Free SMS, free incoming and outgoing control,
voicemail transcriptions, etc......

GV has taken the route of having VT as a learned not bought
technology. In the long run, this will serve its customers best. GV VT
is an international project and is highly complex, only time solves VT
issues.
Anyhoo you can turn off VT and the number of other GV features are

You don't. You have to use either the desktop application or
GVNotifier. But you knew that so spit it out, what's the point other
than the one on your head?

$9.99 per month and like right now, just as you are, I'm on my
computer where I have two different ways to use GV free SMS.
