Of course you realize that the LTE standard for data is all based on
CDMA, just a different flavor of CDMA.

The essence of what he wrote is correct. Verizon is taking an evolution
to 4G which will be compatible with most of the world's carriers. They
could have chosen a different evolution to 4G, one not compatible with
the GSM evolution. I think they made the right choice.

Actually it's not, in fact I think all the CDMA bits originally proposed
as lower-speed fallbacks were written out of the standard to try to keep
Qualcomm entirely out of the intellectual property pool. I'm pretty sure
LTE is now all OFDM on the downlink (as is WiMax), with maybe something
else in the uplink direction.
