Apple files patent for "solar cells on portable devices"
In a patent application dated April 24, 2008 and titled "Solar cells
on portable devices" attributed to a number of Apple employees, Apple
reveals possible plans to integrate solar cells into devices such as
iPods and MacBooks.
This might lick the iPhone battery problem, what do you think?

It won't, unless a new type of heretofore unknown solar cell has been
developed. I use a solar charger for my current phone than utilizes two
cells each roughly the size of an iPhone. Together they output about 200mw
of current in full sunlight, which would take 7-8 hours (again, in full
sunlight) to charge my phone from dead. The charger has it's own
rechargeable battery which stores the output of the cells to make the
charger usable. (I bought it for use when camping, but use it more often
in the car when using my phone's MP3 function through my car radio- the
isolated charger avoids the car electrical noise picked up by my FM
modulator when my DC charge cord is used.)

Solar cells are STUPID on an iAnything. How are you gonna see what you're
doing standing in the hot, bright sun? Solar cells don't work under
flourescent light hardly at all.
Devices with backlit displays look best in the DARK.....
That's gotta be Stevie's stupidest idea yet!
Take the pod out into the sunshine where the photons are. Try reading the
display or doing anything that requires you to SEE what it says.
I better keep an eye on my stock price before Stupid causes a drop in my
profits.

Totallu wrong; the idea is to sandwich the solar cells behind LCD
screens, so they take up zero net device real estate.

Ok, bright boy, you take your little iphone out into the sun and leave the
display cooking in the hot sun and see what happens. Add the heat of a
solar panel converting 65% of the sunlight into pure heat, adding to the
overheating problem and watch what happens.
I'll give you a hint....the display will turn black as the liquid crystals
the display runs on melt into a liquid. They'll recrystalize when it cools
but to stress the display in this manner WILL, not might, make it FAIL!
Absolutely the WORST thing you can do to a liquid crystal display,
Applecrap or not, is to leave it cooking in the hot sun!.....not to mention
the effects on the electronics and a lithium-ion battery pack you can't
change yourself under it.
I think Stevie is trying to cook iPhones so he can sell more. This is a
really stupid idea!

There are six separate patents on the use of a laser pointer for playing
with a cat. Laugh if you like, I'm putting the finishing touches on my
patents for pants, beef and television.

I had a Sony Walkman cassette player that had solar cells on one side.
It worked very well.
