Default Can 2125 use Laptop as an Internet gateway?

I would like to test the web access on my Cingular/HTC 2125 for free -
without a Media plan.

Can I set the 2125 to use/share a laptop internet connection when connected
through USB, or IR?

I do not mean tethering the laptop to use the 2125 as a modem.

If you are not using it as a modem why use it?

I thought I was clear about why I wanted to use this feature.

"I would like to test the web access on my Cingular/HTC 2125 for free -
without a Media plan."

If I was not clear enough, here goes:
As I have no Media plan and do not want to incur data connection charges, I
would like to use the Active Sync Network/Internet Pass-though feature to
explore the look and feel of SmartPhone Internet access. I am using
ActiveSync 4.2 to sucessfully connect and sync my device using either USB or
IR, but am unable to make any connection with the Internet connection
supplied through my network.

I would be grateful if anyone running the 2125 with WM5/Active Sync 4.2
would detail their connection settings for a successful pass-through
Internet connection.

I expect the internet speeds would be much faster using laptop connection
than the Edge/Gprs speeds, but I would also test using the slower IR
connection.
My Axim V50 works fine with ActiveSync 3.8, but the screen resolution and
stylus interface do not give me the feel of Internet on a Smartphone.
I have read much that Activesync has changed the way pass-through works with
4.2, but nothing on settings for a 2125.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I don't have a 2125, but rather the equivalent of an 8125. I've never
played with a 2125 so I don't know if the following will apply.

On the 8125 you change your connection settings in the
settings/connections (tab)/connections (app) to "My Work Network."
Passthrough usually works then, but some have reported needing to change
the connection option in Activesync on their PC from "Automatic" to
"Internet."

You might also try posting this in microsoft.puplic.smartphones if the
responses here aren't helpful...

Good luck!

Thanks Todd,

The key was to Select Network to "The Internet" in the Internet
Explorer|Options|Connections.

I had been changing settings from Start|Settings|Connections where there are
only GPRS, Dial-up, Proxy etc.

I appreciate your help, and did review the smartphone newsgroup.

Regards,
