I'm on tMobile, whose coverage is not as good as Cingular's.

I've had the best luck with Nokia candy bar phones: 3390, 3590, 3595 and
currently a 6010. Ran that past a guy at the local tMob store and he opined
that Nokias in general gave the best connections most often of all the phones
they offer.

Look into the Nokia candybar phones. They seem tough to beat in my
experience. My wife's phone has been rock solid (but of course
it's discontinued now).

The Treo's IIRC were pretty renown for being lousy at RF.

The current Motorola v3's seem to have happy users if I recall
correctly. I'll be looking at those in a couple months when I'm due
for an upgrade.

Phonescoop.com has a database and reviews for whatever they're worth.

It is alleged that bell claimed:

I've had no more reception problems with my Treo 650 on Cingular than
I've had with any phone I used to use with Verizon. If anything, where
I live and play, I have better reception with my Treo on Cingular than
with anything on Verizon. This is because with a few exceptions,
Cingular has better tower placements in my region.

I suspect that the problem isn't the phone so much as the service
coverage where you are.

Cingular has a reasonably accurate street-level interactive coverage
map here: <http://onlinecare.cingular.com/coverageviewer/> so you can
check for yourself if you're in a fringe area. It seems to take into
account things like topography, and signal attenuation. The printed
maps you'll find at the stores don't do that.

Try an external antenna. You can find them on Ebay, or various on-line
retailers.
