It's not holding a charge beyond a few minutes. Had it for 10-11
months. Rarely use it as a phone, but often as a PDA, iPod. (I'm in
Australia for a long time -- the ATT plan costs a fortune.) But
anyway, can this be? My battery shot alreaady? And I have to find some
hack in Sydney to hack into it to replace it because there is no Apple
support in australia for an iPhone?

In Australia? Where there is no service for iPhone that doesn't
violate the warranty?

But there will still not be a user replaceable battery...

Like with all lithium ion batteries, it will eventually die.
The length of time that takes depends on the build quality, how much you
use it, how hot it gets when recharging, and heavy a load you place on
it.
There isn't anything uniquely good or bad about the iPhone battery
itself, so your results will vary.
I burned through my first Razr battery in about six months (to the point
where I had only a few hours of standby time), my mom is still going
strong on her first battery after two and a half years.

Maybe my battery is not shot, but my battery life gauge/icon is.
Whenever I turn the phone on I have a red line and it says I have
little life left. But it runs forever as I keep charging it.
