Default Doubts about new Cingular 2125 phone

Hi all, I just got my new Cingular 2125 Smartphone today as part of a 2
year contract with Cingular for the $39.99 per month plan. Actually I
came across this deal at Wirefly.com and got the phone for free (after
mail-in rebates). I'm very happy to get this phone. It's the first
smartphone that I own and looks and works great, but there are a couple
of things that are causing doubts in my mind. First, there was an
unheard voice mail when I turned on the phone for the first time and
it's probably not for me. Btw, I got a new phone number with this
phone. Secondly, when I turned it on for the first time, the date and
time as shown by Windows Mobile were not correct (the date was showing
as May 26, 2006). I could set the current date and time through
settings after that. (btw, shouldn't the date and time be broadcast
over the network instead of setting it locally in the phone?)

So I am wondering if the phone is a new one. It looks like new and
probably is, but I just want to be more sure that Wirefly didn't give
me a refurbished phone. About the unheard voice mail, I think that's
probably for the person who had this phone number, and might not have
anything to do with the phone. But again, I'm not totally sure. Any
feedback or suggestion on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

I would return the phone as it has been discontinued! The Cingular 3125 has
been released as a replacement http://msmobiles.com/news.php/5551.html

Why not just listen to it? It may be a welcome message.

I ordered a 2125 from a WireFly subsidiary (cellphonehookup.com) it
arrived new.... with a new SIM card, but I popped my old sim in.

The datetime is incorrect probably because it was setup in different
timezone and has been powered down.

Given the problems associated with returning items purchased on-line
and that you believe "it probably is new", just keep it. If you need
help setting it up, take it to a Cingular store they will help you
(they should anyway).

Default Re: Doubts about new Cingular 2125 phone

The article doesn't say the 2125 is being discountinued immediately,
it's says that Cingular has announced they will replace the 2125, with
no time table given, just "soon". This is no suprise, they have already
announced they plan to replace the 8125 (PDA phone) and phones are
phased out every year.

The is no evidence of reported problems with the 2125, in fact perform
a quick web search on the 2125 and you'll find a host of very positive
reviews. The current issue of Windows Mobile SmartPhone & Pocket PC
magazine rated the 2125 as one of the best SmartPhones available, so if
Cingular is saying "there some problem with the phone" and not giving
us the details...The author of the article states that the information
is coming from a Cingular sales clerk (hardly a spokesperson for
Cingular).

If Cingular follows there own trends, most likely they will phase out
the 2125 in late 06 and bring its replacement model out in early 2007.
The 2125 was released in mid-January of 2006. It's a strong possibility
that the 2125's replacement will be the HTC MTeoR rebranded, which
again if Cingular followes trends would make it the Cingular 2525
(they've already announced the 8525 as the 8125's replacement).

Completely unrelated to the 2125, Cingular announced a while back that
they would begin carrying a Windows Mobile 5 based flip-phone (Cingular
3135) which is a rebranded HTC "Star Trek". My understanding was the
release of this device had nothing to do with the 2125, it hasn't been
hyped as a replacement and it's been around for while now. The
processor and overall technology in the 3135 is the same generation as
the 2125, so I'd be surprised if it's the 2125's replacement as the
article indicates. The MTeoR is next generation technology in that it's
processor is about 33% faster than the ARM found in the 2125 and it
supports 3G.

You can't wait around forever for a new model to come out... If it's
only a month away, it may be worth the wait, but even then you don't
know what kind of new contract incentives are going to be available on
the new phone (will not be a factor for some, for most it will be the
deciding factor). A year ago Cingular had the Audiovox SMT5600
Smartphone, this year it's the Cingular 2125, next year it will
probably be the 2525 and in 2008 another new model... I think you can
gauge upgrade time based on the OS that runs on the phone, while the
2007 models look to host some really cool features the core Windows
Mobile 5.0 OS found in the current 8125 and 2125 models is the same and
Microsoft hasn't announced a Mobile 6.0 platform yet, so it's probably
not going to arrive until 2008.

Both the HTC Star Trek and MTeoR are available as unlocked GSM phones
today on ebay and other on-line store fronts.

You can purchase the 3125 now at Cingular stores and at
www.cingular.com, the 2125 is also still available (although it's
temporarly "out of stock") The 3125, is just the first flip-phone
Windows SmartPhone available from Cingular, it lacks the large screen
size of the 2125, but it feels more like a razor.

To the best of my understanding, Microsoft based Smartphones and Pocket PC
Phones do not sync time via a system broadcast from the cell provider as do
other GSM phones. The time is updated via Activesync using the computer
time or by manually updating the time. This has been the case with the
Smartphones I have used, the Moto MPX220, Audiovox SMT5600 and Cingular
8125.

I have a T-Mobile MDA (identical to your 8125.) The menu setting to let
the GSM network set your time is hidden by default and needs a registry
edit to show. (HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\ShowTimeZonePage=1 )

Then you'll find the option in the phone app's "options" menu.
