Default European retailers were sold out of the new iPhone 3G before storesin the US even opened

European retailers sell out at iPhone 3G launch

European retailers were sold out of the new iPhone 3G before stores in
the US even opened on Friday, thanks in part to strong marketing from
Apple's mobile partners.

The initial sales surge not only blew through stores' inventory but
also delivered a knock-out punch to Apple's iTunes activation servers.

The Swiss daily newspaper "20 Minuten" reported that hundreds waited
in line for hours in Zürich in front of the central Swisscom store.
The mobile phone provider opened 100 of its retail stores at 6:30 AM
and served snacks and water to those waiting in line.

20 Minuten iPhone story

In Bern, Swisscom's main shop in the Christoffel shopping center was
sold out of 16 GB iPhones by 8 AM, and was sold out of all iPhones by
two in the afternoon. An employee reported that the store had received
an initial allotment of 3,000 iPhones. There are over a dozen other
Swisscom retail stores in the Bern area, and all were sold out on the
first day. Orange didn't open its stores as early in the morning, but
was similarly sold out of all iPhones by early afternoon as well.

Made even more amazing by Inventory originally intended for Canada
having been shipped onto Europe, after Steve Jobs got pissed at Rogers
pricing schemes.

yes, apple was certainly a victim of it's own success during the first
day, so the moral is trying to roll out the iphone planet wide, then
also doing the MobileMe transition within the same 3 days, proved too
much. now, everything is back to normal, but too much success can cause
unforeseen problems.

Well, by the time the security server recovers, the stores should have
another tiny shipment for the fanbois.

well it is very important to the direction of the cell industry, the new
iPhone is selling extremely well, so it's very likely most other vendors
will fall out of business, so please try and keep up with what is going

what???

the servers were fine a bit later in the day, it's the initial 8am rush
worldwide that caused the issue... now everything is keeping pace for
40,000 an hour sales.

apple has the best servers on the planet, so it just goes to show how
POPULAR the iPhone has become...

If microsoft was trying to do this, people would be dying off of old age
in the streets before they got to the front of the line

larry, please THINK before you post.

I agree! Open Source Apache for Linux is a fine server software.

But, they need some more horsepower in the processors and bandwidth in the
pipe if they're gonna keep doing stupid things like releasing an upgrade
download on the same day as a new device.

Someone at Apple IT should have been screaming bloody murder to stop it....

Not as long as Apple is playing the old "hold back" game only selling 3000
units per store trying to prevent discounting.

Sellphone sales are measured in the tens of MILLIONS not thousands. All
the 3Gs so far manufactured is akin to a grain of sand to the Sahara
Desert.

Stevies' gonna hafta open up those warehouses and release the product if he
wants to make a pimple in sellphone sales.....

Yesterday's sales represent a trickling faucet on the drinking fountain
overlooking Niagara Falls!

how is it that you are privy to how many units apple shipped to each
store?

apple said they'd sell 10 million by the end of 2008 and they're on
track to meet that goal. that's not too bad for someone with zero
market share just thirteen months ago.

Which massive Apple server system does Apple run that touts Linux
Apache/1.3.29 (Darwin) PHP/4.3.10 as its operating system on Apple's own
webpage core?

The data above was downloaded by Sam Spade straight off the Apple.com
webpage only because I have no valid address for the servers used for
license/purchase checking of 3G FruitFones. www.apple.com runs on a
LINUX server under APACHE 1.3.29 (Darwin)

http://www.apache.org/

Download it yourself from one of these mirrors:
http://www.apache.org/mirrors/

They MIGHT be running Apache on a Windows Server box, I suppose. I was
trying to be optimistic because Apple loves to tell everyone their OS is
Unix.....(c;

it does not tout linux apache at all.

it quite clearly says 'darwin' which is the open source kernel of mac
os x. the hardware are apple xserve rack mount computers, and they're
all running mac os x server.

as stated above, it does not run linux; it runs mac os x server.

mac os x is fully certified unix.

Not really, because the Windows Mobile OS isn't so locked down that it has
to get permission from the mothership before it's allowed to make a phone
call!

Maybe Apple should think before they "pre-brick..." They're already
restricting sales to customers signing two-year contracts- for what reason
on God's Green Earth does the phone need to contact Cupertino to receive
permission to OPERATE?

Wow! Where does Apple sell servers? I've never seen one. All they have
here are little desktop and laptops.

Is there a URL where one can read about Apple server platforms??

apple doesn't allow discounting no matter how many units are in stock...
but apple doesn't allow overstock either so it's not a problem

yes, and apple sold about 1.3 million iphones in the last 72 hours, and
your point?

the goal is 1%, and they were at 0.8% when they sold out of iPhone 1.0's
a month ago. so everything is right on target.

Apache is not related to Linux... every Mac ships with Apache and has
for YEARS...

The problem was too much demand, which a company like MS or BB would die
to have.

any mac can run mac os x server, although apple has rack mount hardware
that's better suited for high demand installations. for home or small
business, a mac mini is often sufficient.

also, the consumer version of os x includes things such as apache and
vpn, they just need to be enabled and configured.

i provided two in the previous post, one of which is included below.

Hmm...I see. Well, obviously, it wasn't enough....(c;

I pictured someone as large as Apple with something like:
http://www.emc.com/solutions/index.htm
using storage solutions like:
http://www.emc.com/products/family/symmetrix-family.htm

15000 RPM disk drives are not fast enough so:

" Availability

EMC plans to offer flash drives in 73 GB and 146 GB capacities for the
Symmetrix DMX-4 platform beginning later in Q1 2008."

which are 30 times faster....

I have a friend who is a field service engineer for EMC, here. What an
amazing combination of hardware and software solutions they have....

....and it's mostly transparent to the end user if it bombs. The master
processor simply takes out of service whatever massive memory board or
drive has errors, calls EMC on its own phone line telling EMC's
dispatching computer what's wrong and where and what parts need
swapping. My friend's pager goes off as the core processor makes a
trouble ticket all without human intervention. He gets the trouble
ticket over the sellphone data circuits because he lives on the road,
drops by one of their prepositioned warehouses to pick up the part or
has it directly delivered overnight to the site. He shows up, opens the
box, hotswaps the parts then hangs around until the box's core computer
is happy with the new device and cancels the trouble ticket, itself.

It's a good thing computers aren't allowed to drive......

.....humans still have some, small but significant use to them.

Oh I wanted that super fast 100,000 RPM IBM drive he let me hold in my
hot, grubby, sweaty hands for a few minutes.....(c;

You should hear its faint, nearly inaudible, whine as it powers up....
(pant)

Thanks to that little temper tantrum, we now have better rates then the
US, $30 for 6GB, vs AT&T's "unlimited" with a 5GB cap.

And not just for Apple users either, although only for Rogers' own 3G
phones, sadly my imported TyTN II doesn't qualify even through Rogers'
TyTN does. I could fight it, but it's less hassle to just grab an
iPhone and move the SIM.

apple primarily uses Sun Sparcs and their own Xserves... these run
Solaris, OSX and a bit of Linux on macs or sparcs.

you can always figure out what a site is running here:

http://netcraft.com/

and a search for apple.com shows much of the main list... but be aware
than "anything" with "apple" in the domain... shows up on this link:

http://searchdns.netcraft.com/?posit...host=apple.com

larry, you make everyone laugh at your simple world view.

Apple has sold high powered servers for decades, and as recently as 4
years ago had the 3rd fastest computer in the world using them.

Apple's big boy toys can be found here:

Now I'm even more confused. It talks about PCI bus, Ethernets, Firewire?,
USB??

This is like an office server to feed the Macs and printers....

I was looking for a serious Gigabit server like what I HOPE Apple is using
to feed the world access to the permission box to turn on the damned
FruitFones. These gadgets don't have ethernet ports, you plug Gigabit
fiber into them....Gigabits per second.....

Here's an example, for those stuck with desktops on their brains.....
