Default Re: FAQ for Cingular Wireless

* Cingular has been AT&T for a little while now. Although sometimes we still
refer to it as Cingular. I still write AT&T/Cingular in emails at times...

So, John, what do you know about T.38 Fax Over IP? Some newer cellular gear
is supporting it. And supposedly it's a pretty burned in standard now. What
do you know about AT&T/Cingular supporting that protocol on their GSM/UMTS
network?

I've worked with marine vessels for more than a few years now, so I deal a
lot with what would be lumped into a "Mobile Platform". More accurately
probably a "Mobile Office". The whole network gets connected to cellular (or
whatever is available). Voice gets jacked into the PBX. And fax is one
thing they would like to be able to do over mobile networks. CSD and WFAX
being killed by Cingular is old news to me because I lived through it and
had to hear customers crying because it stopped working. We added Verizon to
some such mobile platforms and Fax was sort of working over that still, at
least the last time I tested which may be going back a few months or more.

True, and as soon as I get some free time (hah!), I'm going to overhaul
the FAQ Wiki accordingly.

I haven't heard of any plans by AT&T/Cingular to support it.

I personally use Internet fax services like eFax and FAX1, which work so
well for me that I'm not terribly interested in native fax with a mobile
device.
