Default Hoow can I avoid data fees when abroad on my iPhone?

Am I still charged whenever I simply roam looking for a provider? I
just want to use the calender and iPod and Note sfucntionw heile
abroad as the fees to get e-mail and calls are gigantic. Anyway around
this other than shutting the phone off. Or will simply not making
calls or getting e-mails do the trick.

Why am I charged data fees foe WiFi e-mail anyway?

WiFi is not charged to ATT. Data though ATT server is.
get email off web at place with free WiFi.

When I use the e-mail function on my iPhone it automatically gets it
through the ATT server, even when I have free wifi at home! Can this
be true? I am getting killed on data charges. Never seen such a thing
before!

Sure, if you don't configure the phone to use Wi-Fi. (Don't ask me
how- I don't use an iPhone.)

Most likely since Apple and AT&T assumed that everyone with an iPhone
would be on a contract plan with unlimited data, they set the unit to
pull all e-mail through the cell network (I'll also wager that it's
necessary for visual voicemail to work, since that essentially just
"push" e-mail.)

You just need to figure out how to force the e-mail client o use Wi-
Fi only.

I have my Windows Mobile phone set to pull all e-mail via cellular
(for complicated reasons revolving around T-Mobile's use of a proxy
server for internet access, I have to choose either Wi-Fi or cellular
for e-mail. Fallback from one to the other doesn't work on my data
plan.) Since I have an unlimited data plan it's not an issue for
me, thankfully.

Menu>Settings>WiFi>Wi-Fi switch to *ON*, choose your network, set *ON* "Ask
to Join Network"

How are you getting killed for data, it's only $20 a month unlimited?

unlimited?

I assume the OP selected prepaid service with the fake SSN "hack" and
is paying $10/MB.

No the OP said "Overseas" so its roaming charges.

On reflection, you're probably right. I read it as he was going to
go overseas and was trying to fix something before he left, but after
reading the original post again, I think you're right and he's
already there.
