I have a fellow employee and another friend who recently called Cingular
to get info on their current plan. Just from the single phone call, they
found that they had been either signed up for another plan or their
current plan had been renewed. (But not for any increase in monthly
payments).
So now when they try to find out why, they don't. And if they want to
cancel, the word is "tough - that will be $175" (or whatever) or they can
wait two more years.
So, getting fed up with AT@T in whatever form, I want to cancel my account
and get a go phone, since I seldom use the phone anyway.
My question is, how do I make sure that my plan (two years) has "expired"
without falling into the same trap? I think it has, but would like to
make sure.

Call and ask them when/if you are elgigible for a fully discounted
upgrade phone.

I would suppose you could avoid the trap, whatever it is, if you want to.
Call, ask if you contract has expired, hang up.
You could look at your account on www.cingular.com
If you click on "upgrade phone" it will show that you are either eligible
to upgrade, or show the date in the future that you will be able to
upgrade, which would coincide with the contract that is tied to the phone
subsidy.
There should also be a "services" pdf available, dated when your contract
started, but I don't see that on the newly redesigned site.

You can't necessarily trust the site. I regularly monitor my "plan"
info and recently discovered that my "term of service" is "24 months".
Since my 12 month obligation was was satisfied this past March, I
immediately contacted Cingular Customer Service about this and was
assured by the Cingular rep I was NOT under any contract obligation. The
rep could not explain the erroneous "terms of service" data. With all of
that said, the site will allow me to upgrade my phone. <shrug>
If you have registered for access through the internet the you can see the
actual date the contract expires. After logging in to your account, find the
link for "Edit User Information". At that location you can see the date the
contract expires for each individual phone you have.

That's not exactly true. If you are on a 24 month contract, you can upgrade
after 21 months. On a 1 year, it is 11 months. If you have a 24 month AND
pay (single line charge) of over 75.00 per month (3 month average), you can
upgrade after 12 months. Upgrade eligibility and contract expiration date
are not the same date.

Ahhhh. I did not know that.
My bad for the wrong info. Thanks for correcting it Mark.

The User Info page does show my correct termination date... at least it is
24 months after my start date.
The "Cingular Service Summary" that I referenced earlier is now available
from this page. It is not the same document that I retreived in the past.
The old version didn't have a "generated date" in it.
The old one has my activation date, and a term of 24 months.
The new one has no activation date, and a term of 20 months.
That might have been done to match the original termination date.
Back at the web page, the "eligible for upgrade" on the phone looks like 60
days prior to my two year contract.
