Default Impressions of V3xx?

I'm thinking of upgrading my phone (on a tight budget) and am considering
the Motorola V3xx (Wal-mart $28.99). The screen looks a little better than
the V3. I will not be using the music player but do make heavy use of the
appointment calendar and would like to sync with Outlook. Can anyone share
their experience with this phone or offer alternatives?

Thanks in advance... Fred

Go for it. It has a very good reputation from everything I've seen
around here. I got the Krazr (from wal mart) and though it's been
the best voice phone I've ever had, now that I have need for mobile
data, I wish I'd gotten the v3xx.

That's a great deal there at Wal Mart for that phone! I like dealing
with their cell folks -- no commissions, no surprises.

Agreed all around. I have the V3xx, and it's excellent, with lightning
fast data (HSDPA), and a screen that's actually much better than the
original V3. Highly recommended.

What is "around here"? Geography, or newsgroup?

You suggested a Krzr when I asked about a replacement for the V3xx.

I didn't like my V3xx. My Nokia 6126 has better reception. There is no 3G
here, so that doesn't matter yet.

You've been teh only detractor to the v3xx I've seen thus far in the
ng, which makes me wonder if you had a bad unit perhaps?

To the OP, check out what phonescoop.com reviews have to say if you'd
like a larger dataset to choose on.

Oh, and Fred might be interested in what you didn't like about the
v3xx you had other than reception.

I was considering the Krazr also. I have no need for the data so 3G is not
something I'd use. Is the screen clear enough for appt. viewing & such? I
was concerned about that aspect although I like the Krazr's size better.
You don't want to sell yours do you?

Where were you a month ago when I was looking for a v3xx to trade for
my Krzr before I gave up and activated a new line with an AT&T Tilt
8925? Hee hee.

Does Wal Mart still have the blue Krazr's for about $75?

At the time I got mine, v3xx's were the same price as the Krazr.

I don't use the calendar but lemme see. Down in Tools... calendar.

The monthly calendar view shows me a month and a bunch of numbers in
the usual (looks like a month calendar") way, and all are clear.

I added an appointment and it seems that in month view Days with stuff
on them show with a little tiny triangle in teh bottom right of the
date.

All very clean. Seems quite usable to me. Maybe I should look into
this feature. Hee hee. All my shit's still in Palm desktop. What do
you use on teh PC side for your appointments? Curious what all Moto
supports for interchange?

Motorola has a program called appropriately enough Motorola Phone Tools. I
think Motorola wants about $30 for it but you can get it on eBay for about
$10. It will work just like your Palm Desktop, you can type in all the
stuff on your computer and then sync to the phone. I believe it will sync
with Outlook as well. It's really a great little program & will do a lot
more. I bought when I got my V3 when they first came out but I can't find
it now, I'll buy it again though.

I don't recall anything else bad about it in particular.
Reception is kind if the main point, isn't it?

I wish I had tried another V3xx. I really didn't the possibility of a
working but weak unit. If it had failed outright, I would have tried
another.

My other thought at the time was that the independent Cingular dealer in
Napa was a whole lot easier to deal with in person than the pile of
customer service reps that I talked to after ordering via cingular.com.

I think you may have gotten a bad V3xx -- mine is better than any Nokia
I've tried, including the 6126.

I have had quite a number of phones over the years (started with the
original Motorola "brick"), including Nokia phones, and my RAZR V3 has
been the best to date.

I thought the V3 was roundly denounced in favor of the V3xx, a different
phone.

Or, phrased differently, yet another phone as the subject of a "mine is the
best" claim.

If I am not using data (no 3G) is the Krzr esentially a V3xx clone? Are
there any other advantages to the V3xx (I do plan on extensive use of the

No. There are a number of differences, ann they're both different
form factors.

Here's a side by side comparison of specs
http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/com...&id%5B%5D=1086

V3xx has a lower resolution camera, about half the talk time, one less
GSM band. On the plus side, though, it has 3G data rates as you know,
3x the memory of the Krzr (which if you store a bashitload in your
calendar might be an issue?), and 2 WCDMA bands that the Krzr lacks
(does WCDMA do anything for us AT&T folks by the way?), and the V3xx
screen is 240 x 320 pixels vs the Krzr's screen which is 176 x 220
pixels. That screen size and memory may be what sways you for your
calendaring desires.

Only you and your eyes and hands with the two in front of you will
help you decide, I suspect.

> Are there any other advantages to the V3xx (I do plan on extensive use
> of the appt. calendar).

Is there an AT&T store near you that carries both that might have two
working demo models that you can compare side by side?

Seems it's time to stop researching and time to get two of em side by
side and pull the trigger. :-) The key for you I suspect will be
eyeballing what the calendars look like side by side on those
differently sized screens.

Thanks Todd I really appreciated the in depth analysis. Someone mentioned
the Krzr was considerably slower with the menus, probably a function of the
memory difference.

I haven't had my hands on a v3xx for any extended period, but yeah,
the Krazr's menu's can be a little laggy. Not at all as bad as the
v3c I had before, but still not as zippy as any of the NOkia's I've
had (then again none of those were Java-fied or fancy though).

I suspect the difference has less to do with memory and much more to
do with the v3xx probably having a faster processor. But with that
comment I'm at the outer reaches of my knowledge of these embedded
platforms.

WCDMA is the 3G modulation.

If the European V3xx is any indication, 3G reception on the V3xx
may be none too good. I spent a few hours yesterday in a maginal
3G area, and when I got around to looking the phone had run its
battery (fully charged in the morning) down to the red zone, was
showing a connection to the carrier at 0 bars, and wouldn't
actually complete a call. Forcing it to switch to the carrier's
GSM network (why it wouldn't do that itself is another small
mystery to me) got it back to 4 bars, but it soon turned itself off
because of the battery.

My wife was carrying another 3G phone with service from the same
carrier. That phone is a very cheap, very ugly Samsung that the
carrier gave me for free in return for signing an 18-month, $15/month
contract. It had a mostly full battery, showed two bars of 3G signal
where the V3xx had none, and could complete calls where the V3xx
couldn't.

This is a bit disappointing.

That is a big key. I thought I was saving money by ordering through a
"corporate discount" site from AT&T.
https://www.wireless.att.com/business/authenticate/

It turns out that the difference in price was an upfront discount verses a
mail in rebate down to the same price.

By ordering online, I got the joy of talking to clueless order takers, and
possibly giving up on the V3xx and going to Nokia because of one bad V3xx
sample, which I thought was a model problem. The online folks are really
clueless.

Later, visiting a local store to correct problems with the way the online
order was performed, I was met by friendly knowledgeable staff. They were
very helpful, even though they got nothing out of the deal.

I wouldn't use an online site unless I was sure of what I wanted, and if
there is a variance from one unit to the next as bad as has been suggested
for my V3xx, that doesn't sound like a good idea even then, unless you are
in such a good signal area that a poor unit wouldn't be noticed.

You should visit the "authenticate" site though, as the discount, if it
exists, can be applied to your ongoing monthly charges.

I've had great luck with my xx over the past year. Much better
reception, camera, video and the 3G is fast.

Great for MP3's in stereo BT, 2gb card is great for MP3's and picts/
videos.
