iPhone a Never Ending Goldrush: Doodle Jump- 3,000,000 sold
Never Ending Goldrush: Doodle Jump for iPhone Smashes Through 3
Million Sales
Doodle Jump for the iPhone is something like a developer’s fairy tale:
two brothers set out to make a game using only the talents they’ve got
at hand, and end up striking gold. They keep pushing out minor
updates, and the game just keeps selling. Tomorrow morning, Lima Sky
will be announcing that Doodle Jump has just surpassed 3 million sales
— a feat they claim is a first for any Indie development house.
The "Doodle Jump" brothers have made well over a million dollars each
so far.
A fact of life id no one has seen anything like this as an Android
developer!

I'm sure that's true, both for the present and the future. There will be
no million dollar payoff selling "Doodle Jump" or other such games, to
Android users, no matter how successful Android becomes. The target
market for Android is very different than the target market for the iPhone.

I'm not so sure- while the Android market might have a more eclectic
appeal, I see a lot of overlap, particularly for those who, for whatever
reason, can't/won't use AT&T [non-US readers can substitute their
market's official iPhone operator(s.)] Most the people I know with
Android phones chose them because they were the "iPhoney-est" handset
their operator offered- not specifically because they were Android.
Assuming Android eventually attains the tens of millions of users the
iPhone enjoys, I can certainly see a few Android app millionaires being
made. Given the crowded "shelves" in the iTunes app store, I'd wager the
odds of creating a decent side-income as a mobile dev is beter with
Android right now than with the iPhone given the Android Market's "big
fish/small pond" economy. Right now, the Apple app store is like the
Lotto- one guy in a million hits it really big, encouraging a bunch of
folks to take a shot, buy their $99 dev "tickets" but never hit! The
150,000 apps and billion-plus downloads means, on average, a whole lot of
developers are each making a tiny bit of money.

Android developers by the thousands have discovered the solution to
Android game piracy..."they simply develop a game no one wants."

Interesting but another figure is tens of thousands of those making a
'tiny bit of money' off of the iPhone are pulling down $1400 a week.
Not enough to get rich but enough to represent a decent second income
for one person during a global recession. Such are the results of
programing for a market now in excess of 75,000,000 souls who have an
Apple Touch OS device.

Where did you read "tens of thousands" are pulling $1400/week?
Apparently I'm not alone in describing the app store as a lottery:
Again, I don't doubt a few skilled and/or lucky people are doing VERY well.
But if tens of thousands of devs were actually making $73K/year
($1400/week) selling apps, Apple would be shouting that fact from the
rooftops.
Instead, we hear about the occasional dev who made a few hundred K or
maybe even a million from a single app- the "hit the lotto" scenario.
This "gold rush" myth, fueled by anecdotal evidence, benefits Apple- it
draws in more developers, which means more apps. The state lottery
always trots out the one lucky shmuck who won $10 million to get people
to buy tickets- they never brag the "average" player wins about $0.40 on
every dollar played.
