That is actually a pretty good article, quite long and revealing abou
the ills around the celluar industry.

Also I like the part on the pressure to produce a new Apple phone had
the woman slam her door so hard the rescue group took an hour to get
her out of her office when the door bent and jammed.

And the carriers are still writing 2 year contracts supposedly subsidizing
cheap or relatively cheap handset phones that they "give" you or "sell" you
very very cheap.

So... the carriers got both? The old and the new? And cellular is not the
only one using the subsidizing and long term keep-you contract trick.
Satellite TV I see is doing it as well. I think I got $250.00 worth of free
gear (big deal!) and the free installation. Total value $350 at the most,
and DirecTV got a 2-year contract.

Did iPhone users signing up with AT&T get to NOT sign a term contract? I bet
they signed at least a 1 or 2 year contract. Of course you can drop every
"feature" that you want except for the minimum requirement. I can do the
same with DirecTV. But I still have a contract 2 years.

The benefit is only that hardware manufacturers get some freedom in creating
wireless gear, so we might see some innovative gear coming to the consumers.
We'll still be signing 2 year contracts for cell phones of all types and
data cards or sims that go in data and voice capable devices. Personally I
could care less if my phone plays music. I might impress my friends a time
or two showing them music or video. After that I'm back to work using my
phone only for voice. I might use a Internet capable phone for some
things... but it seems awful small of a screen as compared to laptops.

(Actually I don't mind contracts, if the cellular service doesn't suck... I
had one that did suck and they still wanted their early termination fee. And
I think there's been some exposure to the trick carriers have been doing of
renewing/extending your contract, wether you know it or not, each and every
time you make a change to your cell account or get a new [or replacement]
handset. I dropped a few handsets in the waterways because I work on/for
boats. Every time I had to buy a replacement, it seems they renewed my
agreement and didn't bother to tell me. By the way that carrier wasn't
Cingular/AT&T.)

When you buy and sign up a iphone, you agree to a 2 yr contract.
Anyone can buy a iphone. But to get it to work you agree to the 2 yr.

I have an iPhone, but have had many phones prior. The thought of
switching carriers every few months just to tweak the deal would be huge
waste of my time. No problem with 2 years. I have a business to run.

Journalism has actually long been there to sell advertising. Readers
don't begin to pay the cost of publishing. They are just a product
that's being delivered to advertisers.
